Eating Disorders: The Internalization of the Thin Body Ideal

Research over the last two decades has indicated that the incidence of eating disorders appears to be increasing. Health care professionals have reported what some consider to be epidemic rates of these disorders in recent years, particularly among adolescents. One extreme (but possibly inflated) estimate is that 20% of the total female population between the ages of 12 and 30 suffer from a major eating disorder; this may represent a 10% increase from three decades ago.

Although most researchers concur that the number of new cases of eating disorders is increasing, there is less agreement about the factors that may be promoting this increase. Sociocultural factors are thought to play a central etiological role, and have received the most research attention in the last decade. Specifically, many theorists strongly believe that our culture’s ultraslender ideal-body image (or thin-ideal) portrayed in the media has been a critical contributor. The thin-ideal woman is actually a caricature; she is well below the average weight of typical women in our culture, and is portrayed as optimally successful, desirable, and happy. Sociocultural theorists and researchers also argue that the thin-ideal depicted in the media has become significantly thinner over the last several decades and, therefore, the discrepancy between the thin-ideal (i.e., 5’10”, 110lbs) and the average woman (i.e., 5’4″, 142lbs) has increased. This, combined with the intense focus on dieting in our culture, has reportedly helped promote the current epidemic rates of eating disorders.

According to the sociocultural model of eating disorders, young girls in our society quickly learn that thinness elicits many forms of social reinforcement, achievement, and rewards, whereas obesity is associated with various social punishments such as social isolation. Therefore, repeated exposure to the successful thin-ideal portrayed by the media leads some girls and women to overinternalize the stereotype. That is, women’s perception of the typically dramatic discrepancy between their body shape and size, relative to the cultural ideal, is thought to produce heightened body dissatisfaction and depressed moods, and prompts them to set unrealistic body-dimension goals for themselves. It is argued that as young girls are repeatedly exposed to thin-ideal images they will begin to internalize this thin-ideal. Theorists argue that with the thin-ideal becoming even thinner in recent years, many young women are finding it increasingly impossible to achieve an ultraslim body form. They begin to take more drastic measures to control their body weight (i.e., restricting, purging, excessive exercise) and develop negative feelings about themselves and their body. A vicious cycle is started, because growing body dissatisfaction is thought to lead to increased dieting and use of extreme measures to lose weight in some women.

Sociocultural researchers have compiled a plenitude of indirect evidence linking the decreasing size of the thin-ideal in the media and intense focus on dieting in our culture to increased rates of eating disorders. However, only a few research investigations have attempted to directly examine whether a relationship exists between the thin-ideal image portrayed in the media, and women’s satisfaction with their own bodies. Given the prevalence of eating disorders, more empirical evidence is needed to determine whether there is a relationship between the thin-ideal image depicted in the media, and women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies. To help further this area of research, I recently completed a study that experimentally examined the effects of exposure to the thin-ideal on women’s affect, self-esteem, body satisfaction, and level of internalization of the thin body image. My research also assessed how the thin-ideal image differentially impacted women with a diagnosed eating disorder. College women (N= 145) were randomly exposed to photographs from three popular women’s magazines (Cosmopolitan, Vogue, and Glamour) containing either thin-ideal images or neutral images (non-models). The subjects in each group viewed 40 images and were asked to answer a corresponding question on the Media Response Questionnaire. This questionnaire was developed specifically for this research to help maximize experimental conditions versus control effects and ensure that subjects adequately attended to all important features of the media materials for a set period of time. Subjects then completed several measures which included: subscales of the Eating Disorder Inventory, Second Edition (EDI-2), Profile of Mood States (POMS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), and the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ).

The results of this study indicated that brief exposure (30 minutes) to thin images produced heightened levels of body dissatisfaction among women. The findings also indicated that after being exposed to the thin-ideal images, women in the experimental group reported increased negative mood states (i.e. depression, anger, anxiety, fatigue and confusion) compared to women who viewed neutral images. The findings suggest that women had lower scores on the self-esteem measure after exposure to thin images. It was also found that women in the clinical group exhibited lower self-esteem scores than women with eating disorders in the control condition. It was expected that exposure to the thin body image would result in higher levels of internalization of the thin-ideal; however, the results indicated that women exposed to these images had significantly lower levels of internalization compared to women in the neutral condition. One explanation for this finding is that women in the experimental group were reluctant to endorse that they admired this thin-ideal body image given the majority felt dissatisfied with their bodies, exhibited negative mood states, and felt less self-worth after exposure to the images. Hence, women may be reluctant to willingly acknowledge wanting to aspire to look like a thin-ideal when it creates personal distress. One finding of particular interest was that women with eating disorders exhibited significantly more body dissatisfaction and depression after exposure to the thin-ideal relative to all other subgroups of women. This finding suggests that women with eating disorders experience pronounced changes in affect and self-approval compared with other women when viewing images of the thin-ideal.

It should not be surprising that media images have an influence upon their audience. However, the findings of this research suggest that the photographic representation of women in mass circulation fashion magazines can have a powerful influence on women’s self-appraisals. The broader social implications of this research become apparent when one considers the current debate over the appropriateness of ultrathin fashion models (e.g., Kate Moss). It is clear that these images send a dangerous message. Exposure to the media-portrayed thin-ideal was shown to be related to body dissatisfaction, negative affect, and low self-esteem and suggests that women may directly model disordered eating behavior presented in the media (e.g., fasting or purging). Additionally, the focus on dieting in the media may promote dietary restraint, which appears to increase the risks for binge eating.

Media presentation of “idealized” women cannot be the only factor responsible for women’s negative self-appraisals. However, this effect is substantial enough to suggest that media presentation of idealized women’s bodies may have practical relevance. In terms of a clinical application, it might be critical to advise female anorexics and bulimics to avoid publications or television programs that portray women as thin-ideal images. Second, women’s responsiveness to such images might be addressed through cognitive-behavioral therapy. Third, school-based prevention efforts could be aimed at reducing the internalization of the thin-ideal stereotype, as well as promoting body satisfaction. These programs should also emphasize the incongruence between biology and the thin-ideal body image. Negative psychological and physiological risks associated with the pursuit of this body type need to be underscored.

Today’s women can be helped by using media to their advantage, encouraging media representatives to adopt role models reflecting a broader spectrum of beauty than that which has traditionally been portrayed. Several campaigns (Special K, Just My Size) suggest that some media representatives are trying to portray more realistic images.

The Secrets to Optimal Health and Regeneration

Are you spending too much on healthcare and prescriptions? Do your persistent illnesses and medical conditions still remain after countless efforts of experimenting with various diet regimes and health techniques? Regain your youth, re-balance your body’s ideal weight, and increase your body’s immunity with one simple lifestyle change… yoga.

You will be surprised by how fast you can eliminate chronic aches and pains that are just masked by prescription medicine, in which they contain harsh side effects. Medical prescriptions could result to additional future health problems, such as damage to your internal organs, or, even worse, may cause some cancers. With yoga, you will burn fat while increasing your energy levels to its highest, and improve your body’s strength without lifting any weights. Yoga will also make you more flexible, and increases your endurance naturally. It will Improve your overall body strength the most effectively compared to all other forms of fitness. You will naturally tighten your skin, while giving your face a healthy glow. It will look (and feel) like a full body make-over, without the pain and expense of plastic surgery. These discovered techniques have existed since Ancient times.

Another key factor with the yoga lifestyle is changing your diet. It is important to know how to use the foods you eat, when to eat them, and where you should eat your food. If you do not eat these foods correctly, this would make it more difficult to maintain your physical structure and proper weight. Eating the right foods will also bring your body’s health to its optimal state. The wrong foods do not give your body the proper fuel that it needs to utilize its energy accurately. Poor diet leads to indigestion, and then turns into fat build-up. This is a common reason why most of us feel tired without realizing the cause, and that is because we are undernourished, which is a form of malnutrition. And again, this is why it is important to eat the right foods at the right time.

Not all foods labeled as “Health Food” promise what they claim it to be. These foods can be damaging to your health, without even realizing the effects that they can cause.

People who practice yoga advise the best diet is suitable for a natural, healthy lifestyle. Without much effort, there are fast ways to stop junk-food habits. There are reasons why our bodies crave it; it is actually not just based upon will power, or a thoughtless choice.

A shocking and overlooked fact is that the Government hides the truths of what additives are put into our food, which they do not want anyone to discover. They feel this is to our benefit for our convenience.

Old people who practice this innovating lifestyle have proved their doctors wrong by defying the conventional way, and healing themselves naturally. These people have outlived incorrect diagnosis’ by decades.

There is a right way to lose or gain weight, whichever you may chose as your goal. Not just any diet or exercise regimen will work. That is why almost all diets and work-outs fail. Not many people realize how many mistakes can be made when they try to start off fresh with a new, healthy lifestyle. You can heal some of the worst health problems faster than any prescription available. There are women who do not need to cover their gray hair with color products, because they eliminated it, naturally! You will be inspired by the healthiest people in sight as proven examples.

If you are always feeling weak, tired, and sick… this is why. With the rush-paced lifestyle, you become too busy, while poor nutrition becomes an issue… since quick, convenient food becomes a natural habit. And then before you know it, you are back to where you started from… you are now overweight again, and frustrated.

Practicing the yoga lifestyle will increase your confidence. Your friends and colleagues will notice that you look 10 years younger. No more interrupted sleep; your body’s internal organs will re-balance themselves to function normally again. The effects of yoga are long lasting, and your body will continue to function at its optimal level, without ongoing medical treatments and prescriptions. And again, the cost of health care and pharmaceuticals are too expensive. This information is more valuable than nutritionists, videos, and television infomercials you see constantly. You will find yourself saving money, instead of spending it on nutritional supplements that have not worked for you previously. You will no longer be a slave to other’s opinions; be the master of your own health & body.

Health is the key to life; poor health brings you pain and misery, and you could bring those close to you down as well. It would be a dreaded thought of having them end up taking care of you in the future.

Diets fail because they are only theories that do not meet the laws of nature, which are the answer to optimal health. You will find the yoga lifestyle will meet up to your health standards you’ve been longing to achieve.

The Three Hidden Functions of Forms Training – Do You Know What You’re Really Learning?

It’s an argument we have all heard before, ‘Since you would never fight in a sequence like a form, what is the use of practicing forms?’ This argument is valid to the extent that if all you want to learn is how to fight then forms are not necessary. But if you want to improve your overall physical, emotional, and sensory health then forms training is the key. Form are not designed to merely teach combat techniques, there are three other levels and skill sets inherent in forms training that you are learning whether or not you know it.

A therapy which encourages expressive movement increases the motility of the organism, improves its aggression and creates a feeling of strength on both the physical and psychic levels.

Alexander Lowen, The Language of the Body

The Functions of Form

The obvious reason for learning forms is that they teach combat techniques, but in addition there are three purposes behind the practice of forms, they are: as a mnemonic device, to develop the muscular/skeletal system, and to improve psycho motor skills.

Mnemonic Technique

A form is a mnemonic technique that trains the muscles to remember the many complex techniques of hand-to-hand combat of which a martial art is composed. Let’s make an analogy between a learning martial arts and learning the piano. A single technique such as a punch or a kick could be likened to a single musical note. In the beginning you learn the notes of a piano individually and then in scales. Martial arts first teach the techniques individually and then in drills which is similar to practicing scales. Once proficient in notes and scales the next progression is to songs and melodies. In martial arts combat techniques are combined into routines that correspond to songs and are combined differently in each routine, from simple progressions to complex ones.

So how does this work as mnemonic device? Well one of the first uses of music and possibly even the cause of its invention was as a mnemonic device. Ancient bards knew the words to dozens of stories because the stories were sung rather than spoken. This principle is easily demonstrated. If I were to ask you to memorize six notes, C, A, F, A, C, F, in order and I would only tell you once and you were not allowed to write it down. What are your chances of remembering those notes in an hour, or the next day, or next week or when you were 80 years old? Slim to none. But if I were to sing the first six notes of the American national anthem, ‘Oh-say-can-you-see….’ you would be able to remember those notes until the day you died. Music has the ability to encode, and allows the mind to recall, complex packets of information. Forms then are the physical equivalent of music. A form contains packets of kinesthetic information such as posture, balance, center of gravity, movement, fluidity, and the transmission of kinetic energy. By learning forms one also memorizes the dozens of combat techniques of which it is comprised. And like the tales sung by bards, martial arts forms have also transmitted this information down through dozens and perhaps hundreds of generations.

Development of the Muscular/Skeletal System

Forms also work to exercise different areas of the body simultaneously. Practicing forms quickly will develop the cardiovascular system, improve flexibility and anaerobic capacity, and increase the body’s metabolic rate. But in addition, forms also work the often overlooked stabilizer muscle groups. We all know that the body’s large muscles groups such as the quadriceps, gluteus, and abdominals are responsible for strength, and speed. However, posture and balance is achieved through the actions of hundreds of small muscles known collectively as stabilizer muscles. These muscles help to direct the movement of the larger muscles that are essential in executing techniques that require refinement and grace. These stabilizer muscles don’t develop very much through traditional weight exercises that are aimed at isolating and developing the large muscles which is why body builders often appear stiff and wooden. Conversely figure skaters, dancers, and gymnasts are renowned for their poise a result of training that requires superb balance and posture. Because form training requires similar attention to posture and balance they also help to develop grace and fluidity. Psycho-Motor Skills Psycho motor skills are those that involve the movement of the body in space, generally referred to as hand-to-eye coordination.

Forms teach a complex set of positions and movements that require more attention than we normally have. For example, when you first learn a form you must practice very slowly, stopping after each posture to look and check on the position of your hands, arms, feet, legs, shoulders, hips, head and back. As you progress you develop your sense of proprioception which enables you to sense your posture rather than checking it visually. This frees the use of your eyes and attention which can then be used to concentrate on other aspects such as breathing, visualization, or an opponent. The nervous system is trained to monitor and perform a far broader range of bodily expressions, without the need for conscious direction. This is why someone with a background is gymnastics or ballet tends to learn martial arts forms faster than say someone who only played soccer. There are simply many more postures and positions to learn in dance and gymnastics than soccer, which increases the body’s repertoire of movements. Finally, forms require movements be done both right and left handed. As you know the brain is divided into a right and left hemisphere, and that the left brain controls the right side of the body and vice versa. Cat Scan studies show that when both the left and right hemispheres of the brain are stimulated in synchronization that people often experience peak mental acuity and alertness. One way to trigger both sides of the brain is what’s called cross lateral exercises, simply put, something that is done both by the right side of the body and then by the left side. This is exactly what occurs during the performance of a form. In effect then, practicing forms will make you smarter!

We tend to stop learning when we have mastered sufficient skills to attain our immediate objective. Thus for instance, we improve our speech until we can make ourselves understood. But any person who wishes to speak with the clarity of an actor discovers that he must study speech for several years in order to achieve anything approaching his maximum potential. An intricate process of limiting ability accustoms us to make do with a small part of our potential.

Chinese Tips for Training in Form

As you can see forms are a great way to improve both mind and body but keep forms alive and interesting you should occasionally change the way they are performed or add other outside elements. The following are some tips on getting the most out of your forms training.

Varied Terrain

In China and rural Japan, much time is spent training outdoors, in the parks, along beaches, and in the mountains. These varied conditions improve balance and stability to deeper levels than the uniform flat surfaces we usually train and spend our working days on. All martial artists should train under different terrains and conditions. By expanding one’s experience with varied conditions, one is better able to react and move under a greater number of combat situations. Practice your forms on hills, along the beach, on rocky ground, in the snow, and during a rainstorm. Practice at night in candlelight or moonlight. The first thing you will notice is the incredible strain this puts on the legs spurring the development of stronger leg muscles. One also learns to move more perfectly balanced since the ground is often unreliable being either to slippery or too entangled to allow any degree of error.

Increased Difficulty

In earlier times brass or steel rings were worn around the wrists and ankles to add weight during the performance of the form. Special wrist and ankle weights can help in the development of muscles, and endurance. Light dumb bells can also be substituted. Most important, be careful not to perform the movements too quickly since the weights tend to make you overextend your techniques which can cause injury to the joints.

Varied Speed

Practice the form as slowly as possible, as though a tree gently swaying in the wind. It doesn’t matter what style you practice, the method of practicing slowly will provide the same benefits as Tai Chi. The form will have to be adapted to suit the slower speed, kicks become slow steps, requiring not only excellent muscle control but balance as well.

The heart and soul of any martial art is in the way you move. Following precise directions for moving the body does more that simply train you for combat, it improves concentration, self awareness, coordination, versatility, balance, rhythm, and harmony – it teaches you to be alive.

Yoga – Key to Health

Yoga is a wonderful gift form God almighty. It is both art and science. Practice of yoga helps to overcome stress and frustration that we face in our day to day life. It helps to keep our mind body and soul calm and in vibe-rent condition. As we all know our mind and body are inter-related if something happens to the mind it will affect the body and vice versa.

Being healthy is our birth right. Visiting a physician or joining a health club or heath center will not make us healthy. Most of us assume that being muscular is being healthy. But sadly I have to say that it is entirely wrong. Being healthy means complete harmony of our body mind and soul. It is not just being muscular. Being healthy is entirely in our hands. But in present day condition it is becoming more and more difficult to keep oneself healthy. All sorts of evil have crept into our society corruption, murders, Cut-trot competition all these contribute to the progressive degeneration of human body and mind. By observing certain yogic principle we could maintain sound health. One could find inner piece joy and strength by practicing yoga.

Health means to know one self or our inner self. Yoga is the key to our inner self. Now a days whole atmosphere is surcharged with tension and various type of pollution. Even our working condition, hours and work style have changed all these factors leads to a significant amount of loss of energy form our body. We are unaware of this and we still blame the environment condition. If we catch fever or cold we blame weather forgetting the whole process of heath generated with in our-self. It is proven fact that the body itself have defense mechanism that prevent our body form getting disease. But when these defensive mechanism fails we get disease. By the practice of yoga not only our mind is benefited but also intrinsic strength of the inner organs is increase there by increase the toxin elimination process and hence increase in the immunity power of the body.

So in order to be fit both physically and mentally one should practice yoga if you invest your time in learning and practicing yoga I can guarantee you that ” you will never regret learning yoga.”

Omega Supplements and the Many Possible Health Benefits Form Their Use

Studies have been carried out by various health bodies and private organizations into the benefits of Omega 3. Resulting from these studies and tests various claims have been made and I will attempt to bring together some of these claims below. The information presented below has not been verified and is purely for educational use only. If you have any medical issues, then it is essential to get medical advice before using any omega supplement and expecting the supplement to cure the ailment.

So here is the lay mans list of claims, probably not exhaustive, because I am sure most people have some other ailment that Omega Supplements cure, some of these like this list are based on proper research, more of them might be in the category old wives tales and cures.

Cardiovascular disease has long been recognised as been minimized if we have an intake of Omega 3, indeed it is also claimed that heart disease is much lower where a high level of Omega 3 is ingested in the diet e.g. fish eating countries.

The growing problem of Diabetes may be counteracted somewhat by omega 3 fish oils as it helps to reduce some of the markers of diabetes such as apoproteins. The affect of lowering the markers is attributed to fish oils so it is imperative to get medical advice to sure you are using the correct omega supplement.

Fish Oils have been used for generation to relieve aches and pains in the bones and studies have proven that it does help to reduce the pain associated with arthritis.

Cancer particularly colon cancer risk is reduced when omega 3 supplements are part of the diet. It has long been recognised that Eskimos seem to suffer less colon cancer than other groups and this is generally attributed to their consumption of fish.

Use of omega supplements can help to reduce blood pressure, on the other hand people who are on blood thinning solutions need to have professional advice before embarking on a course of omega supplements.

An supplement that seems to have some positive benefit for most conditions if taken in the correct manner has obviously positive benefits in our interaction with other people and pops will swear it enhanced his libido over a number of years. Not sure if this was based on any scientific fact or not.

Finally supplements particularly omega 3 has long been seen as enhancing brain growth and studies have proven that omega 3 fatty assets are concentrated in the brain. Also pregnant women have for generations taken omega supplements. Studies have shown that this helps brain, vision and nerve growth in the foetus.

So where would you be going without your Omegas.

Chemicals in Body Form Grease Proof Wrappings

Next time you’re ordering from a favorite fast food place, or tossing some popcorn in the microwave, think about this… the chemicals that are used to make food wrappers like grease-proof paper have also been found, for the first time ever, someplace you might not like – in human blood.

This according to startling new research in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, the latest in a series of studies that date back to the late 1990s on compounds known as perfluorochemicals or PFCs for short.

And since we’re abbreviating, there’s PFOA (perfuorooctanoic acid) a rather worrisome member of this family; PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) is another. Finally diPAP (polfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters) is the compound that keeps the wrapper around your food from getting greasy.

Scott Mabury, a chemist at the University of Toronto and his team, wanted to learn more about the as-yet-unstudied precursor to PFOA, diPAP, a chemical used to make fast food wrappers resist grease.

He suspected these substances were leaking from the wrappers into the food, and it turns out he was right.

These chemicals aren’t sold commercially, rather they’re products or aids to processing used to make other things.

Both PFOA and PFOS resist oil and water, so they’re ideal as linings for carpets as well as the coating on non-stick pans, but you’ll also find them in our clothes and electronics, and in food packaging like microwave popcorn bags and pizza boxes. They are used by the biggest brands like Teflon, Stainmaster, Scotchgard and Gore-Tex.

The team used a very sensitive, half million dollar mass spectrometer to look at 20 pooled blood samples, collected all across the Midwestern U.S. of both men and women ranging in age from 19 to 70 years old.

Each pooled sample was made up of ten different blood donors. The first ten collected during 2004-2005, another ten in 2008.

Surprisingly, the team saw levels of diPAPs in the samples, even though they’d expected this compound to break down quickly and be undetected – yet it was at the same high levels as PFOA.

The researchers also analyzed extracts from six sewage sludge samples that had been collected in waste treatment plants in Canada during 2007.

These samples also contained high levels of diPAPs, which suggests the compound is already in drinking water and farms.

Animals, even those in locations as remote at the Artic, too have levels of these compounds in their blood.

The team suspects that diPAPs might be contributing to as much as 10% of the PFOA in our own bloodstream. What’s more, the other steps in the breakdown process can bring forth molecules that have been shown in studies to be ten thousand times more toxic than PFOA.

“The take-home message is that some chemicals that make our lives easier, better and more satisfying end up in our bloodstream with unknown toxicological consequences,” warns study co-author Mabury.

He also points out that, “The diPAPs occur at levels in human blood that are comparable to PFOA. We know diPAPs don’t last long in the body, so this suggests an important and fairly constant source.”

When little-understood compounds like these end up in our food and our environment they’re able to enter our bodies, our drinking water and the bodies of other animals, even those very far removed from our civilized world, like Polar bears in the Artic harbor.

So far, perfluorochemicals have been found in every human blood sample tested, and at pretty high levels too. In animal studies PFOA and PFOS have been tied to developmental problems, cancer and other.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has convinced American manufacturers to stop using PFOS, and has encouraged other firms to find alternatives and cut emissions of PFOA, as well as many of the super dangerous precursor molecules.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration studies show that diPAPs and other such chemicals can migrate in to some foods at levels that are several hundred times higher than the currently approved guidelines.

No one, so far, has studied the health effects in people of exposure to the grease reducing chemicals, or the by products of these substances.

Until more is know, your best bet is to limit your exposure as much as possible to plastic packaging wherever possible to avoid chemicals in body building up.

Water and Salt the Foundation of Natural Health and Longevity

Many elements are critical to sustaining life and a strong immune system. The four most important ones are: water, oxygen, sodium and potassium. In order to maintain health, they all must be in balance. All of these nutrients have to coexist in right proportions in order for a human body to function properly. Let us remember that the best nutrients are produced by nature – live unprocessed foods.

People sometimes call the human body a machine. Of course, the human body is not a machine, but it can be certainly compared to one.

Like a machine, the human body is made up of many systems, all of which are responsible for completing specific tasks. All of the systems in the human body work together and are responsible for running the body in a smooth and efficient way.

Like a machine, the body needs energy to work. In such a mechanism as a car, the energy comes from the gas burned by the engine. Yet human body is far more complex than any man made machine – it is alive.

Everyone wants to live a long and healthy life. Why therefore, don’t we take enough care to provide our bodies with the right quantity of quality elements that it needs to live and function properly? Maybe the reason is the lack of proper information.

So why don’t we study our bodies and their functions? What do we need to be healthy, and how do we properly provide for the needs of our body’s systems?

Would we ever supply our car with an inadequate amount of or a contaminated form of engine oil, gas or air? Of course not! Unless we did not care for its performance and longevity.

So, let us briefly and in a simplified form look at the basic elements that our body needs to function properly.

From a physiological point of view, water serves the following functions: it carries nutrients to all cells in the body and removes unneeded products of metabolism; it allows nutrients to get converted to energy; it regulates body temperature and moisturizes inhaled air.

Salt (Sodium Chloride) is indispensable to life-everyone has 100 to 200 grams of salt in the body. Salt helps to maintain the proper volume of blood in the body and stabilizes proportions of water inside and outside of cells. It plays a vital role in the digestive process and regulates the cardiovascular system. It is also necessary for proper functioning of the nerves that carry impulses to and from the brain. Sodium in combination with calcium, magnesium and potassium helps to regulate metabolism of the body. Together with potassium it regulates the pH balance of blood, and is also necessary for correct functioning of muscles.

The cells in our body are 70% water – our brain is 90% water. The condition of our joints and blood vessels, the presence of liver and kidney stones, and the complexion of our skin all depend on the quality of water that we drink.

Water in our body cells is under a special structured form. All fluids that we consume must be purified and transformed into that specific form. The energy necessary for processing all the fluids we ingest depends on their kind and quality. The more energy is used for unnecessary water processing, the less remains for repairing of our cells and fighting diseases.

Water is obviously a primary factor in maintaining our health and energy. The tiny combination of three nuclei and ten electrons of water possesses special properties that make it unique among the more than 15 million chemical species we presently know. There are three aspects of water that are getting more and more attention: pH, its structure and its subtle energies.

Every one eats salt. We must have it in order to produce bicarbonate and stomach acid, to digest food and to retain water necessary for our organisms. However, too much salt can lead to problems such as edema (as in swollen legs) and other malfunctions of the human body.

It is known that a potassium-sodium imbalance caused by missing potassium, sodium and calcium is the cause of high blood pressure and the main source of major diseases.

The human body contains two types of salty waters: one type is held inside of the cells of the body and the other is held outside of the cells. Good health depends on the balance of these two types of water. This balance is maintained by a sodium-potassium pump system. The amount of sodium outside the cells has to be matched by an equivalent amount of potassium inside the cells. Since the volume of water inside the cells is greater than the volume of water outside of them, the cells have to be supplied with potassium in order to hold the pressure of water equally balanced. Cells would not be able to hold enough water without potassium.
